The Nobel Film Prize

Tag: Politicsdoug @ 6:34 pm

While I’m already completely off-topic, why has Al Gore got the Nobel Peace Prize? I thought it was for a major price of work that has made a real difference in the world. Films, (including Gore’s) get Oscars. But what actual difference has this film (recently found by the High Court to contain significant inaccuracies) made to the world? And all this in a year when a century-old conflict in Northern Ireland actually looks like it has finally been successfully resolved. Hmm.. who shall we give the prize to, people who’ve ended a bitter conflict or someone who’s made a movie? Gosh … that’s a hard one.

Gordon’s moral compass

Tag: Politicsdoug @ 5:53 pm

While I’m posting on things I try to avoid, I also want to express my exasperation (better out than in) at the total dork that is the British Prime Minister. After a decade sulking in the shadows and sending minions out to brief against Tony Blair, then pretending it was nothing to do with him, he finally gets the top job, and then tries to behave the same way. He sends minions out to whip an election, and then when it becomes apparent he’s not as popular as he hoped, he pretends it was nothing to with him. So he stands in front of the camera and lies – Nothing to do with the polls – and this is only just after a week he told everyone (yet again) about his “moral compass.” As one blog comment pithily had it: “Brown is the new yellow”.

So, in case you want to know what Gordon’s moral compass looks like, here is an illustration.

Breaking news: bishop talks sense

Tag: Anglicandoug @ 5:17 pm

I usually do my best to ignore the misery and mess that likes to call itself the Anglican Communion. But I hope you will read this excellent post by the Bishop Of Buckingham, where he speaks out in a very blunt way. (HT Dave Walker). After the posturing of the bishops of Rochester and Winchester, both of whom feel they should be Canterbury, some clear-sighted honesty and humility is a welcome change.
