No subculture here, please

Dave Walker has drawn my attention to something I wish weren’t true. the first UK magazine for Christian men. I just hate the whole Christian subculture thing, and this has prompted me (not least in the light of other recent posts) to add a whole new category here: Rants.

And what about the content

The first issue will address such thorny areas as: What does God thing (sic) about sex? Is it OK to have a beer? and What should be our response to Islam?

While it will centre on the Christian response to many difficult problems Sorted will also include a gadgets’ page, movie previews, motoring coverage, a “Sex Doc” and “60-Second Vicar.”

Clearly “sex” is a “Christian” problem but there are no problems with gadgets, cars and the acquisitive society, which are just there to help you feel this is a “real” men’s magazine, but just without naked girlies.

And “Is it OK to have a beer? ” Puh-leeze.

And I hate the use of adjectives! Especially those pertaining to religion. I am working on a translation of psalm 51 - neither Christian nor Jewish, neither manly nor womanly, neither Greek nor barbarian. I doubt it would make it into a men’s mag.

I once saw a stand at an exhibition for a Christian Sailing Club. I don’t think they were too impressed when I asked them if Christian sailing was where you got out and pushed if you were becalmed.

    LOL!

But of course the whole problem of the subculture arises because too many Christians compartmentalize their lives. That’s why so few speak out on important social or political issues; their religion is the religion of the closet.

Perhaps a Christian magazine might offer a rather different take on “the acquisitive society” from typical secular ones whose advertisers pay them to promote the “spend, spend, spend today, pay tomorrow” culture. If so, that would be sufficient reason for such a magazine.

Peter, I will try to suspend judgement on this one - and take a look at what they’re advertising (!!)
