The Nobel Film Prize
While I’m already completely off-topic, why has Al Gore got the Nobel Peace Prize? I thought it was for a major price of work that has made a real difference in the world. Films, (including Gore’s) get Oscars. But what actual difference has this film (recently found by the High Court to contain significant inaccuracies) made to the world? And all this in a year when a century-old conflict in Northern Ireland actually looks like it has finally been successfully resolved. Hmm.. who shall we give the prize to, people who’ve ended a bitter conflict or someone who’s made a movie? Gosh … that’s a hard one.

Maybe Blair will get the prize later for his achievements in Northern Ireland. Or maybe the Nobel Committee will judge that his moral compass is no better than Brown’s. But I think it is still a bit early for that. The Nobel Committee has in the past rushed into giving prizes for Middle East breakthroughs that have proved rather temporary. Perhaps they have learned their lesson.

It wasn’t just Blair I was thinking of, though he’s certainly included. And I do accept that Iraq makes that rather difficult (understatement) at the moment, if at all. But I am intensely annoyed that it can get awarded for making a film.

The Economist agrees.

will he keep the smallest ecological footprint he can by accepting the award over the phone, or will he consume an immense amount of number 2 fuel oil in a private jet to accept it in person?

Maybe someone will get the Prize for a blog some day.
