Why McClaren must go
The England manager needs to be sacked:
- not just because he has no strategy
- not just because he has made some fairly gifted players into incompetent plodders
- not just because he couldn’t manage a piss-up in a brewery
BUT because, at the end of tonight’s defeat, he turned his back on his players and walked out of the stadium without going to speak to any of them. That is not leadership, and for that alone he must go.

Perhaps that was him going. If he was too ashamed to say goodbye, indeed he should have been.

it is interesting how sports becomes a source of implied courtesy, hospitality, and integrity. we expect so much of such public figures, who have the same feet of clay you and i do, and who’s ‘ministry-success-criteria’ carry such high expectations…

it was strange to see that load of players and that manager act so naively. Lots of experience there, just seemed clueless and outclassed. Hargreaves MUST play in that defensive mid role if England want to do well.

Can’t help but musing on biblical equivalents. The Hezekiah XI winning because the other side all went down with the deadly-belly runs (or whatever it was!) and died in the changing rooms before they could get on the pitch. The Exodus XI’s little problem with their rather expensive mascot causing the Ref to give out the red card ’somewhat excessively’ as Motty might say. (Motty is, of course, our bro-in-Christ in the sheepskin coat.) Thoughts of ‘the’ sheepskin coat leads to animal sacrifices and proper penance. Would being paraded in sackcloth and ashes every Saturday until Euro 08 assuage the abhorrence of the nation, the god whom they serve? Mind you, I suppose that would give the fashion industry a whole new market to exploit for a new line of haute couture in burlap!
