The New New Jerusalem Bible

Thanks to Better Bibles for noticing this. The most recent development of the Jerusalem Bible seems to have been going on for some time. I don’t know how I’ve missed this. Yesterday I was somewhat more cynical over another new translation. Today, I have to say that this proposal for The Bible in its Traditions [...]

Christian Resources Exhibition

I’m of today to this exhibition looking for ideas for our church and parish, and one or two specifics at a good cost. These things are not my natural habitat, and I’m prone to gawp in amazement at the variety of “Christian” merchandise on the market, and all the enthusiastic shoppers for Jesus. I still [...]

Yes, it’s another Bible

Michael Bird posts news of another English Bible translation. The immediate comments on his blog are like yeah, this is what we really really need, not! (And no, that’s not the sort of English it will be written in.) I must confess that this was also my initial reaction. However, I am encouraged by two [...]

Total Depravity

I feel I need to say this on Jim West’s behalf. I refer to the wicked person who has hacked and deleted his blog. Jim may be a curmudgeonly, contrarian Zwingliolater, but that’s why we love him (and bait him). I know he would see this evil attack as yet another example of total depravity [...]

A big thank you

I want to publicly record my gratitude to the kind parishioner who has given me a new PDA. For several months I have been struggling with organising my life on paper, and it hasn’t been easy. Now I intend getting up-to-speed again.
It’s strange though. The first PalmPilot I had – which lasted for six years [...]

Jim West and the aliens

I nearly called this post “Jim West is wrong again”. It’s unlike me to find I need to respond to Jim twice in a row like this I’m not getting at him, but he really is wrong.
He has a strange attack on a commonplace idea today. He dislikes the way in which the Matthean [...]

Bloggy bits and search terms

While updating Wordpress, I’ve also added the Scripturizer plug in. I’ll be interested to see how well this works, so feedback is appreciated. It’s set to the NRSV.
I’m amazed and proud that the following search terms not only found this blog, but (as of today) turned up as “I’m feeling lucky searches in Google.

50% gray [...]

Why Jim West is wrong

Jim has a characteristically diffident post on what he learned from Karl Barth.
It is the undeniable, irrefutable, unalterable, eternal truth that the Gospel is in and of itself thoroughly sufficient and that the Gospel + Anything = heresy.

Leaving aside the consummate irony of a disciple of Bultmann (perhaps the greatest 20th century example [...]

John 3:17 — what he should have said?!

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world — he’s going to have a church to do that.
(An irreverent thought that popped into my mind while reading today’s gospel!)

Parents and kids

Everything is not what it seems (don’t patronise me)

Welcome

I'm Doug Chaplin, parish priest and human being. Sometimes I have thoughts I want to share. Sometimes I have thoughts I should keep to myself. Sometimes I get them confused. Happy browsing.
