Biblical Studies Carnival – call for submissions

Just before he dropped off the face of the earth (hopefully not because of any serious problems relocating his mother) Tyler asked me if I would do the next Biblical Studies Carnival. This should be Carnival 31, although I don’t know what the non-appearance (so far) of 30 will do to that numbering.
My own view [...]

Ruth Gledhill’s Gafcon scoop

I think the biggest scoop in the Gafcon reporting is Ruth Geldhill’s sighting of wealthy and controversial delegate Howard Ahmanson. According to Wikipedia:1
He is reported to have “never supported his mentor’s calls for the death penalty for homosexuals”; rather, as the Orange County Register reported in 2004, “he stops just short of condemning the idea”, [...]

Time to get really annoyed with the Gafcon soapbox

One of the latest stories out of the anti-gay jamboree that calls itself orthodox Anglicanism is the call of one Nigerian bishop for Rowan Williams to resign. Emmanuel Chukwuma was the idiot who tried to exorcise Richard Kirker’s demon of homosexuality at the 1998 Lambeth Conference.
Chukwuma did additional study at St John’s College Nottingham in [...]

Eliding history and theology in the search for Jesus

Some people (and I think I would include Lüdemann in this) seem to be searching for the historical reconstruction farthest away from the later developments of orthodoxy, so that instead of supporting Christian faith, the Scriptures become an argument for its wrongheadness. … Now while I would argue as a believer that the last of these approaches in the end needs to integrate and subsume the first two, I don’t believe it should do so in a way which either fails to recognise the integrity of the other approaches, nor simply seeks to drag them into subservience.

Doctor Who: characters and cliffhangers

Mark Goodacre and Loren Rosson have been keeping up their respective Who reviews (revWhos?). In a post today Loren reveals his dislike for the character driven stories of new Who, over against the plot driven stories of classic Who. I think he’s wrong generally, because plots where you care about the characters are more exciting [...]

Moral Michael or Nasty Nazir Ali?

The Sunday Telegraph is almost certainly the most right-wing of all the British broadsheets. It also seems to be the Bishop of Rochester’s favoured vehicle, first for announcing the presence of Muslim run no-go areas in this country (no-go areas no-one else has managed to actually evidence), and now for telling the world he isn’t [...]

Confatulations, Australia

Hmm, so much for stereotypes of bronzed fit bodies hanging out on Bondi Beach. Australia has officially overtaken the USA as the world’s fattest nation. It could add a whole new dimension to he phrase beach bum.

The Costs of Orthodoxy

How can I not be cynical about the real reasons African provinces are competing to gain oversight over conservative American congregations. Here’s an excerpt from a parish newsletter (click the June 10 link) for one of the American parishes under Ugandan oversight.

Thank you to all who have so faithfully and generously given to help with [...]

McCain

The best way to get rid of the McBrother. (Gen 4)

The only good gay …

African leadership comes with some heavy ambiguities. Iain Dale draws attention to this simple political ad which has been banned in Zimbabwe, no doubt because like all-criticism of Mugabe it is pro-British and therefore oh-so-gay.
At the same time the so-called leaders of Anglican orthodoxy are meeting in Jerusalem. Prominent among them is Emmanuel Kolini, archbishop [...]

Welcome
