West and Tilling: the missing link

I have long pondered the strangeness of the West-Tilling relationship: what was it that drew the Wright-thinking Chris Tilling into the (almost always) wrong-thinking (and Wright-hating) Jim West’s orbit. Was it some slavish obedience to the Pet Shop Boys that made him Go West as a young man? But I think I’ve cracked it.
