Have a little patience

It’s meant to be a virtue, even a biblical and traditional one, and not just the gentle advice of dubiously gay-friendly popsters Take That, but it does seem to have got lost. Arguably a lack of patience was a significant failing, even sin, in TEC when it consecrated Gene Robinson. But currently it seems to [...]

Lambeth leadership

The bishops are “in retreat”and the Archbishop is acting as their retreat speaker, guiding them back to God, Jesus, and their episcopal calling and the Church’s. Where’s the smiting and excommunication? Call that Christian leadership?

Women priests save the church from heresy

There’ve been a fair few reactions to the vote of the Church of England’s General Synod to move forward towards the ordination of women as bishops. One of the tendencies I’ve noted in more than the odd report, however, is that this is a liberal development, and one that largely overturns the Church’s tradition. It [...]

Anglo-Catholics and a bit of honesty

The “flying bishop” of Ebbsfleet, Andrew Burnham, has decided to write an article for the Catholic Herald suggesting that many Anglo-Catholics may and perhaps should leave for Rome, after the vote in favour of women as bishops, and the vote against creating a perpetual enclave of those who won’t accept them.
I would describe myself as [...]

Ooohh! That’s got to hurt!

The Daily Telegraph is posting a link of most influential Anglicans. Okay, these contests are mildly silly and rarely helpful, but I wonder what this ranking says.
43. Chris Sugden – director of Anglican Mainstream
42. Davis Mac-Iyalla – Changing Attitude, Nigeria.
When a conservative English newspaper puts a gay Nigerian layman ahead of an ordained English traditionalist, [...]

Faltering towards women bishops

A cautious welcome to what looks to me like a reasonably positive compromise vote by the General Synod on moving towards women bishops. (And with a good amount of support for a not quite successful, but still significant amendment by the Bishop of Leeds and Ripon which will probably prove influential.) I note, however, that [...]

The Wright man for Canterbury

I want to draw attention to the whole of this piece by Tom Wright on the Fulcrum site, not because I agree with all he says (I don’t) but for the courage and clarity with which he sticks to a position that will draw the ire of both / many sides. And in particular I [...]

If you are easily offended …

… don’t read this post on Gafcon.

Gafcon: how right is your doxy?

The most acute observation I’ve seen so far on the GAFCON statement has come from a Baptist. Writing about the section on Scripture

The Bible is to be translated, read, preached, taught and obeyed in its plain and canonical sense, respectful of the church’s historic and consensual reading.

he says

Note the omission of the word ‘interpreted’. By [...]

Ruth Gledhill’s Gafcon scoop

I think the biggest scoop in the Gafcon reporting is Ruth Geldhill’s sighting of wealthy and controversial delegate Howard Ahmanson. According to Wikipedia:1
He is reported to have “never supported his mentor’s calls for the death penalty for homosexuals”; rather, as the Orange County Register reported in 2004, “he stops just short of condemning the idea”, [...]

Welcome

I'm Doug Chaplin, parish priest and human being. Sometimes I have thoughts I want to share. Sometimes I have thoughts I should keep to myself. Sometimes I get them confused. Happy browsing.
